La Fuite en Egypte depicts a pensive Mary, uprooted from her home and traveling to Egypt with family in tow. According to St. Matthew:

And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

Well written article, I stumbled upon a Gerome bronze, one the equestrian series, Caesar Crosses the Rubicon, at a swap meet in Riverside CA a few years back. I vaguely recognized the artists name and purchased it for a few dollars. I met with Jon Swihart at his Santa Monica home and he verified it’s authenticity. Jon, a good friend of Gerald, (Jerry) Ackerman was most helpfull in giving information about the bronze and the artist. Very nice man, a great artist in his own right. I did contact Mr. Ackerman and spoke for awhile, but as he no longer updates his cataloge on Gerome was unable to give me more data about the bronze, other than that which is already given in his book. My chance find ended up being quite the adventure into the marvelous world of French art, and Gerome’s work and life. Jon has many letters written by Gerome discussing his relationship with his daughter and son in law, whom he truly disliked. It put a very human face on the artist, and made me appreciate his work that much more.
