Away for A Week
Mihály Munkácsy (Hungarian, 1844-1900) Yawning Apprentice. (a. 1880)
For the next week, I will be traveling and unable to post. In the meantime, here are a few articles I highly recommend:
-
“A Literary Education” by Joseph Epstein, published in The New Criterion: An essay on the importance of being well-read.
-
“Life and Poetry” from the blog Slow Painting: A beautiful essay on the importance of reading poems regularly.
-
“Admit It, You’re As Bored As I Am” by John Queenan, writer for The Guardian newspaper in London: On the state of contemporary classical music.
-
“The Poet” by Ralph Waldo Emerson: The essay that inspired Walt Whitman to write Leaves of Grass.

Love your blog, thoughts and interests.
I love Mihaly Munkacsy’s soft, expressive brush strokes; his romantic lighting, similar to Rembrandt IMHO; and his attention to the power of gesture. I find his work to be both placidly serene and excitably dramatic to great effect.
